Athens: full moon at the Acropolis Museum and SNFCC

Two events for the August full moon were announced on Tuesday 18 August 2026 and concern Friday 28 August: the Acropolis Museum will operate with extended hours until midnight, while at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center four Stanley Kubrick films will be screened with free admission. These are two independent programmes, at different points in Athens, linked by the same evening. Opening archaeological sites and museums during the August full moon is an annual institution of the Ministry of Culture; however, the full nationwide list of participating sites had not been made public at the time of writing.

The Acropolis Museum will operate on Friday 28 August with single opening hours from 09:00 to 24:00, at the normal ticket price. The ticket desks and shops will serve visitors until 23:30, while the museum restaurant will stay open until midnight. Admission will be free to the temporary exhibition «Inspiration. Ancient Greek Art in Italy», which presents 38 works from Italian museums and closes on 30 August, two days after the full moon evening. On the same day, at 18:00, there will be a guided tour lasting 45 minutes for up to thirty people; bookings are made through the online platform events.theacropolismuseum.gr, as places are limited.

At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Kallithea, the film marathon will begin at 21:00 in the Great Lawn of the Stavros Niarchos Park and will run until the early hours, with free admission. The programme opens at 21:00 with Dr. Strangelove (1964), continues at 22:45 with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), at 01:15 with A Clockwork Orange (1971) and closes at 03:45 with The Shining (1980). The event’s sponsor is Aperol, while the SNFCC’s Grand Donor is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The Center’s address is 364 Syngrou Avenue, Kallithea, with access from the public transport routes serving the Syngrou axis and the coastal road.

For anyone planning to attend both, the distance between the two venues and the length of the film programme make it practically necessary to choose an order: the museum tour starts at 18:00 and the first screening at 21:00. The full moon evening traditionally draws large crowds to the sites that open, resulting in queues at the ticket desks during the final hours of opening.
