Aspropyrgos: arrest over two shooting incidents

Two shooting incidents that took place on the afternoon of Saturday 15 August 2026 in a settlement in Aspropyrgos have been solved by the Aspropyrgos Crime Prosecution and Investigation Department. According to the Hellenic Police announcement, a 28-year-old was arrested by officers of the Crime Prevention and Suppression Unit, and a case file was drawn up against him for attempted homicide and for breaching the firearms legislation. The man arrested was taken before the competent prosecutor and is presumed innocent until the competent court rules otherwise. The charge of attempted homicide is a felony and the case is brought under the ordinary investigation procedure.

In the first incident, according to the case file, a verbal exchange preceded between the 28-year-old, who was travelling in a vehicle, and a woman on foot. The 28-year-old is then reported to have fired a shotgun in her direction. Her underage son, aged 14, was wounded by the shots and was taken to hospital. The child’s identifying details are not being made public. No information has been given about the severity of his injury or about how his condition has developed. A shotgun is a smoothbore weapon which at close range causes extensive wounds, a fact that weighs on the legal classification of the act.

The second incident had taken place a little earlier in the same area. Two people approached a house and fired a shotgun at it. A 25-year-old was wounded in the right hand and was also taken to hospital. In the course of the investigation two more people have been identified and are being sought by the authorities. The two cases were linked to each other by the officers who investigated them, although the exact content of that link has not been made public. It has not been clarified whether the two incidents are connected with a pre-existing dispute between the people involved.

Aspropyrgos has recorded a series of incidents involving firearms this year, an issue raised repeatedly by the municipal authority and by residents. The Western Attica Police Directorate has stepped up its presence with targeted operations and checks, while earlier in the month there were shootings in Neoktista. The case file in this particular case will be assessed by the prosecuting authority, while investigations to locate the two identified individuals continue.
