Agios Dimitrios: 18-year-old injured in robbery

An attempted robbery involving injury took place shortly after 17:00 on Tuesday 18 August 2026 in Agios Dimitrios, at the junction of Menelaou and Psiloreiti streets. According to ERT’s report, the victim was an 18-year-old who was walking down the street when he was attacked by a young man. The attacker is reported to have used violence and a sharp object in an attempt to take money and personal belongings from him. During the struggle that followed, the 18-year-old was wounded with a knife in the back and the head, while the assailant fled.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Evangelismos Hospital, where he received stitches. Following searches in the wider area, officers located and took in for questioning a 23-year-old man as a suspect, on the basis of descriptions given by eyewitnesses. The 23-year-old was taken to the Agios Dimitrios Security Department, where an identification procedure by the victim is expected. Until that is completed, no charge has been brought and the presumption of innocence applies. No official Hellenic Police statement has been issued about the incident.

The speed with which the suspect was brought in — within a few hours of the report — is attributed to the help of passers-by who stayed at the scene and gave a description. In practice this is the factor that determines the outcome of such cases in the densely populated neighbourhoods of the southern suburbs, where the streets are narrow and there are multiple escape routes. The area around the Menelaou and Psiloreiti junction is largely residential, with pedestrian traffic in the late afternoon.

The incident adds to a series of violent crime cases in Attica recorded on the same day, among them the three arrests over thefts from shops in Athens. The police investigation to locate and identify the perpetrator continues, while it has not been made known whether any item was in fact taken from the victim.
