Menidi: Fire near Kapota military base

A fire broke out on the evening of Thursday, 13 August, in low vegetation and waste on Parnithos Avenue in Menidi, near the Kapota military base. The Fire Service Operations Center was notified around 19:00, and the response was immediate, as the day had been declared a fire alert day for Attica. Five minutes later, at 19:04, the 112 emergency system sent a message to Acharnes residents instructing them to “remain alert and follow the instructions of the authorities.” The choice to issue an alert rather than an evacuation order indicated that authorities did not consider it necessary to evacuate residential areas.

The firefighting effort involved 73 firefighters with 25 vehicles, three hiking teams from the 1st EMODE, volunteer firefighters, and two helicopters. Water tankers from the Acharnes municipality also provided support. Parnithos Avenue was closed to traffic at the height of Eleftherios Venizelos and at the height of Constantine Karamanlis Avenue. The flames reached the courtyard of a textile factory before their advance was halted. The fire was brought under control after approximately thirty minutes, with forces remaining on scene to prevent reignition.

The rapid containment was attributed both to the size of the force deployed and the fact that the fire spread across flat ground rather than a forest slope, where spread would have accelerated more quickly. The Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management received continuous imagery from an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with thermal and optical cameras. Aerial surveillance has become standard practice in recent years for urban and suburban fire response, enabling detection of hidden fire sources and guiding ground forces in real time, especially after sunset when firefighting aircraft cannot operate.

The closure of traffic on a central road artery of Acharnes during rush hour caused delays, but was considered necessary for the safe deployment of firefighting vehicles and water tankers. The Menidi area presents high fire risk during every summer season, combining extensive undeveloped land with low vegetation, uncontrolled waste dumping, and proximity to both densely populated neighborhoods and the foothills of Mount Parnis. Repeated incidents involving waste pile fires have led the Acharnes municipality to periodically conduct cleanup and perimeter operations.

The causes of the specific fire remain unknown and will be investigated by the competent Fire Service investigation unit. The Fire Service reminds citizens that burning residue and waste is prohibited throughout the fire prevention period and that residents must immediately contact 199 upon detecting smoke. The heightened alert status maintained by municipal services, including pre-positioned water tankers, reflects the sustained danger throughout the fire season. Coordination between municipal authorities, police, and fire services ensures rapid response capabilities.

The incident demonstrates the importance of maintaining emergency readiness during high-risk periods and the critical role of aerial reconnaissance in modern firefighting operations. The pre-positioning of equipment and personnel in vulnerable areas reduces response times significantly. Additionally, public awareness campaigns about fire prevention measures continue to be essential for reducing human-caused incidents, which account for the vast majority of fires in Greece during the summer season.

The area surrounding Menidi remains under enhanced surveillance with regular patrols and thermal imaging monitoring.
